Sumobot Tournament

March 19 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Join us for a Sumobot Tournament at the NERD Summit!

Learn to build a robot to compete in a Sumobot tournament. Sumobots are small robots that compete to push each other out of the ring. In the first part of this session, you will learn how to build a robot, add sensors to detect the edge of the ring, and program it not to fall out. Develop your own strategy - defensive or offensive - add more sensors, code, and personality to your robot and have fun in our friendly competition.

These tournaments are open to people of all ages and levels of experience. Read more about the Sumobot Tournament rules at holyokecodes.org/sumobot-tournament-rules.

LEGO Sumobot Tournament

Sunday, March 19 // 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

We will build robots with LEGO EV3 kits. We will provide parts, motors, sensors, instructions and everything you need to get in the ring with your sumobot.

No experience is necessary. All ages are welcome to participate. If you are younger than 12 please come accompanied by an older person. We also encourage you to work with a partner or in a small group. Only one registration is needed per group.

If you have your own LEGO parts, you're welcome to build your own robot to bring to the tournament. Just let us know in the registration form. You may be able to help other people who are learning to build their robots, or maybe you'll get some new ideas for your own robot.

Register for the LEGO Sumobot Tournament at ti.to/nerd/nerd-summit-2023 and choose one of the following free tickets:

  • LEGO Sumobot Tournament - Register to use one of our robot kits
  • LEGO Sumobot Tournament - Register to bring your own kit

MINI Sumobot Tournament

Sunday, March 19 // 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

We will be building Sumobots with Zumo robot kits and an Arduino Uno controller. You will learn to program the Arduino microcontroller to control the motors and use IR sensors to keep from falling out of the ring.

No experience is necessary. All ages are welcome to participate. If you are younger than 12, please come accompanied by an older person. We also encourage you to work with a partner or in a small group. Only one registration is needed per group.

To participate in the Sumobot tournament, either choose the registration option that includes the Zumo and Arduino Uno and we will have it for you at the tournament or order your own. If you have a Zumo and an Arduino Uno, we will help with programming. Other robots are allowed (if they meet the specifications) but you will need to program them on your own. We will have some options available for customizing your robot. You can also bring additional customization parts if you want.

Register with one of the following ticket options:
Mini Sumobot Tournament

  • Purchase Zumo robot and batteries with Arduino Uno - $139
  • Purchase Zumo robot and batteries without Arduino Uno (you already have an Uno) - $111
  • BYOR (Bring Your Own Robot) - free

Options for ordering your own:

store.arduino.cc/products/arduino-uno-rev3

Be careful about ordering an Uno because unofficial Unos may have a different chip that will not work with the library we are using. Arduinos other than the Uno will not work with this library.
