10:00 am - 3:00 pm
Design and build your own Sumobot, and compete to win prizes in a Sumo Tournament.
The goal of the Sumobot match is to push another robot out of the ring while not falling out or being pushed off yourself. Your robot can start anywhere on your side of the ring marked by the red lines. Robots usually use a light/color sensor to recognize the white line at the margin of the ring and then backup and turn. Some robots use other sensors (e.g. ultrasonic or infrared distance sensors) to try to detect the other robot, others move randomly. It can be helpful to try to create a wedge that can lift the other robot enough to reduce friction and make it easier to push them off. Some robots use shields to block being picked up by wedges.
There will be a LEGO Mindstorms class and non-LEGO robot classes. Build your own robot at home or join us on January 19 and 26 to build a Mindstorms Sumobot at our lab.
Robots built completely from LEGO Mindstorms EV3, NXT, or other LEGO brand parts. Must have a starting size of less than 9 cubic inches, but may expand after the match starts.
Robots may be built from any material as long as it complies with all other rules. Must have a starting size of less than 6 cubic inches and weight less than 0.5 pounds. The robot may expand after the match starts.
